Welcome,
Once again, Helen and I, and Paula and Brad, want to extend an invitation to all of you to our annual production sale in Burwell on March 2. As I’ve said before, we are trying to produce moderate-framed, muscular, efficient and easy-fleshing cattle that will perform under a variety of conditions with a minimal assistance and extra care.
We’re proud of the fact that when we compare our sale bulls’ EPDs to the active sires of the breed, our bulls average lower on birth weight and maintenance energy and higher on weaning and yearling weights. I feel this is extremely important in these times of high operating and feed costs. We’ve also selected cows with sound udders and good temperament. Paula tags, tattoos and weighs most of the calves at birth with nobody around to keep a snotty cow
off her back. We run our cowherd with a minimum of supplemental feed other than hay. We do feed the 2-year-olds a little grain after calving and the older cows some grain during AI.
We normally AI about 80 percent of the total cows and heifers. The yearling heifers are synchronized, heat detected and bred over a 4 to 5 day period. The 2-year-olds are synchronized with CIDRs and mass bred. The older cows are heat detected for about 21 days. We usually end up getting about 90% of them detected. The later calving cows just go to pasture with the bulls and it’s surprising how many of them calve in the early part of the calving season the next year.
We have very few calving problems with the cows and don’t check them at night unless the weather is bad. We usually assist fewer than 10% of the heifers. No one likes pulling calves less than I do. As you look through the catalog you’ll see I’m not much on writing footnotes on the bulls. I hope we’ve shown most of the information you would like, so I’ll let the bulls speak for themselves.
If you have any questions about the sale cattle, their mothers or anything else, we’ll be glad to answer them as best we can. We also welcome any suggestions you might have for us. After all, when sale day comes, it’s not our opinion that really counts, it’s yours – our valued customers’ – and our goal is to produce what you want.
Hope to see you in Burwell on March 2.
– Lamoine
